A Morning at Lynx Lake

A little embarrassing to admit (please look away Julie), GL and I just paid our first visit to Lynx Lake. We took the dogs over this morning and had an unbelievable time.

For those of you who have not been the lake is about 55 acres and has many accessible trails and some lovely secluded beach areas. The $2.00 self pay fee is very reasonable for a day pass. Also Wednesday is free.

Located just a few minutes off of hwy 69 (turn at Costco and head up the road a couple of miles). It makes a great place for a morning walk or a picnic.

Time to Invest in Local Farms?

A recent New York Times article talks about a trend of communities to buy shares in local farms and share in the harvest. This is a twist on share cropping that just might be worth a closer look.

Summer Sunday

I have really come to enjoy the monsoons in the summer. In California we don’t get much rain in the summertime and my first few years here it was hard to get used to. But watching the clouds roll in and letting mother nature provide natural air conditioning is amazing. Nothing so lovely as the smell of summer rain. And of course the finish, a rainbow. GL took this picture last week from our backyard.

The first is a trip to the lavender farm in Concho for a farm tour and a chance to pick your own.

We will miss you Tim Russert

The untimely death today of Tim Russert is a very great shock and will more than likely be felt for a while. As a Political Science major in college and a lover of politics in America I admired him greatly and watched him most every Sunday on Meet the Press.

As I listen to the tributes from his colleagues and friends about this man’s life some of the same messages came across over and over again. One characteristic stands out, he listened to people and actually heard them and responded accordingly.

Tim was in a profession that is not highly respected yet he valued what he did so much that his own integrity transcended the average news media personality. He made it a point to be the best at what he did and succeeded. He made his profession better because of who he was.

In our own professions that is something we can aspire to.

We will miss you Tim!

What we can learn from the stock market when buying real estate

Unless you have been living in a cave you have seen the volatility of the stock market and specifically commodities like oil and gold. Actually volatility may not be the right word, increase is more descriptive. Why is this happening? Because the paper dollar is sinking in value with no end in sight. Investors during this time look to put their money in areas that will hold value against the dollar.

Another area that has historically been a long term inflation hedge is real estate. Although we are experiencing excess inventory and lower prices when you look at what it is going to cost for replacement of these homes in the future (the cost of commodities like steel, wood, cement, etc) you will not be able to build that house for what you can pay for it today. The result is that in the long term you will make money on real estate.

Because we live in a global economy and must compete on a world market. For building materials we have to look to other countries expansion and contruction to see what the future holds. Countries such as China and India are adding millions of housing units and will continue to build as their economy grows. They push up the cost of supplies and in some cases cause shortages (we experienced this back in 06 with cement).

So if you are looking for a long term hedge against inflation and a way to build wealth for the future you should put your investment team together (realtor, lender accountant and property manager) and investigate real estate. We are likely not going to see prices under replacement costs in the future. The bargains are here but who knows for how long.
